IBM xSeries Systems

The IBM x3850 X5 architecture diagram is shown below. The QPI connection arrangement is the standard Intel 4-way Nehalem-EX system architecture, except that two of the processor connections are not hardwired, but rather connected with special board.

The special arrangement on the x3850 X5 can connect to an additional memory board if the 64-DIMM sockets on the standard 4-way is not sufficient.

The QPI arrangement also allows two 4-socket CPU boards to be connected for an 8-way glue-less system.

Below is the IBM HX5 blade system. The QPI architecture allows a blade system to connect multiple blades into a larger single system, as opposed to independent blade systems.
